Houseboat wedding reception list: Dance with guests? Check. Cut the cake? Check. Abandon ship?
Check.
Believe it or not, that’s how the weekend went for one surprised newlywed couple and almost 60 guests this past weekend on Okanagan Lake, British Columbia, Canada. According to NewsKamloops, Sandy Campbell (aunt to the groom and one of the guests onboard) reported that the wind picked up from a lovely breeze at the beginning of the reception to a rowdier gust after the cake was cut. By the time guests started dancing on the top deck, the wind grew so fierce that the canopies on the boat top were being pulled right off the houseboat, christened The Boardroom. After the houseboat lost a heavy table from the top deck and further crashes announced even more furniture follies, the crew began passing out lifejackets just to be safe.
"Everybody was calm, nobody panicked. But, we were told the wind was coming from a lot of different directions and the fellow driving the boat was steering into the wind," Campbell reported to NewsKamloops. "We were out on the lake going around in circles trying to get into the wind. At no time was there any major tilt to one side or another."
The good news is, after some trouble reaching a safe place to dock, the houseboat was able to find a calmer spot on the Westside and not long after, police rescue boats announced their arrival to help the guests disembark. Thankfully, no one was hurt and the crew performed wonderfully during this misadventure. At any rate, it’ll be a wedding to remember.
