Life Taking Off Years

Restoring a 25-year-old houseboat

Published in the March 2012 Issue March 2012 Feature Bryan Spears

We recently finished a full renovation of our 1986, 14- by 70-foot Sumerset houseboat and it turned out amazing. We keep it at the Volunteer Landing in downtown Knoxville, Tenn., and thought you might like to see a couple of before and after pictures that we took.

After acquiring the Fantasy Yacht building on East Hwy 90 in Monticello, Ky., Thoroughbred Houseboats moved its sales and production operation from its Albany location into the building.

Most people not familiar with houseboats think the boat is just a handful of years old, which we always love to hear. The renovations certainly took at least 15 years off the age of our boat. With our improvements it went from a 1970s-looking mobile home to a modern houseboat with just a little TLC and some elbow grease. We really love the new Victorian tin ceiling and the look it provides.
