Native Sausalito artist Philippe Haas was a featured artist at Riley Street Art Supply as part of last week's San Rafael Art Walk along Fourth Street in downtown San Rafael.
Some of the artist's most popular pieces are ceramic recreations of houseboats of the Gates Cooperative, the Sausalito houseboat community that originated in the 1960s.
Besides ceramics, Haas also works in other media, including drawing and painting. His artwork ranges in style from figurative to the surreal. The artist draws a lot of his inspiration from scenes in his everyday life. Living most of his life in the diverse, tight-knit community on the water at the edge of Sausalito is the driving force behind most of his work.
Haas often sits on his pier with a sketch book. Much of his time is spent in personal reflection. Haas sees perfection in imperfection, which he said is often transcribed directly from his subject matter to his artwork.
