Generating Interest

Published in the May 2011 Issue May 2011 Ask The Expert Brandon Barrus

Every houseboater knows the importance of having a reliable power source onboard at all times. Without power, there's no hot water for showers, no way to watch movies or enjoy late-night card games with the family. These days, generators are more than electricity-generating, noisy machines on the stern of your boat; they are smaller, quieter and more environmentally friendly. Take a look at these models from some of the big players in the marine generator market and find one to suit you and your entertainment provider this summer.

Cummins Onan's Marine QD 7.5

Rugged dependability, high quality and innovation make Cummins Onan Marine Generators a leader in marine generator design and development, providing performance you rely on, whether out on the water or at the dock.

The digital QD (Quiet Diesel) Series models are the first marine generator sets with self-monitoring capability and network communication.

The optional Cummins Onan Digital Display provides user-friendly diagnostics, including extensive engine and alternator information, self-diagnostic features and text display.

The Cummins Onan Marine Generators with advanced design and development processes use technology to lower sound and vibration. The sound shields minimize noise and deliver better sound quality and the optimized mounting system greatly reduces vibration.

Certified to U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) emission standards.

Onan branded products are used in recreational vehicle, marine, commercial mobile, residential standby and portable applications. Cummins Power Generation branded products include temporary or permanent pre-integrated Power Command power systems and related accessories. Power system products include diesel and gas generator sets, automatic transfer switches and paralleling switchgear used in commercial and industrial applications for emergency backup or as the primary power source. Cummins Power Generation also provides services ranging from system design, project management, financing, and operation and maintenance contracts to development of turnkey power plants.

Kohler's 7.5EKD

(distributed by Nixon Power Services)

The 7.5EKD from Kohler features an integral heat exchanger, CARB/EPA emission-compliant design for low CO emissions and one-side serviceability of the fuel filter, cooling systems and lubrication system. It's clear that if you're looking for a generator that is easy to service as well as environmentally-friendly, the 7.5EKD is one to consider.

In addition to the previous features, this model is sequential-port throttle-body fuel-injected and comes with an attached overflow bottle.

The generator itself comes with a remote start 12-pin connector, and a voltage regulation of plus or minus 1.5 percent. Both the rotor and stator are vacuum impregnated and coated with high-bond epoxy varnish, which helps prevent corrosion in high-humidity areas.

Copper windings ensure minimal heat buildup, while the insulation meets NEMA standards for class H insulation.

Directly connected to the engine, the generator has sealed precision ball bearings with a precision-machined steel sleeve in the end bracket (or end bearing tolerance ring) to prevent shaft misalignment and extend bearing life.

Today, Kohler has taken its place on the leading edge of total solutions for residential, commercial and industrial standby/emergency power, distributed power, recreational power, rental, power for special events and more. And as the company sees demand for new and different kinds of power expanding to levels previously unseen, the commitment to innovative products, world-class engineering, responsive after-sale support and unmatched value is stronger than ever.

Northern Lights M673L3

The ideal 6kW generator set is small and lightweight. The M673L3 certainly qualifies. But it stands apart through its remarkable long-life reliability. The reason? The M673L3 runs at 1800 rpm (1500 rpm for 50 Hz) instead of 3600 rpm. Consider that during only 2000 hours of operation the 1800 rpm M673L3 will turn 216 million fewer revolutions than a 3600 rpm set. Its pistons will travel 38,522 fewer miles. Its cylinders will withstand 108 million fewer detonations. Which engine do you think will give more years of reliable service?

The M673L3 has a balanced Lugger three-cylinder diesel instead of a rough two banger. Four platform isolation mounts reduce vibration transmission even more.

For maximum comfort afloat, the new M673L3 has a Sound Maze air intake system. Air enters through a molded rubber hose and an acoustic dampening chamber. Air goes in but much less noise gets out. For maximum sound attenuation, specify a sound enclosure. It is constructed of electrogalvanized steel panels with a powder-coated aluminum extruded framework, and creates a 23 percent smaller overall package than previous versions.

The generator's automatic voltage regulator is powered by an auxiliary AC stator winding that isolates it from the main windings. The AVR always has clean power to provide excitation for faster load response and better motor starting.

Your air conditioner and other motor-driven equipment will love being matched with the 673.

A 30 amp AC circuit breaker in the junction box protects your wiring. Safety shutdowns for low oil pressure, high coolant temperature and high exhaust temperature protect your engine.

The M673L3 meets US EPA Tier III emission standards. You, your moorage neighbors and the environment will all benefit.

With 1800 rpm reliability, low emissions, quiet operation and strong motor starting, good things do come in small packages.

Volpi's Pagura 5000

Volpi's most unique product is its Pagura 5000, which produces 4kW of continuous power, plus a 300 percent short-term overload capability for air conditioner start up. It has a remarket weight of only 183 pounds. With its small size and very low noise rating of 52 DBA, the Pagura 5000 is a clear choice for the consumer wanting a high-quality marine generator for his houseboat.

Established in 1933, Volpi is currently specializing in producing diesel marine soundproof generating sets, totally water-cooled, manufactured for the marine leisure market with a low noise level and with the lowest weight and size in this market.
To achieve the above target not only the engine is water-cooled but a stainless steel jacket around the windings with the main benefit to have no need of ventilation openings into the sound shield, and consequently no noise can escape.
A water-cooled AC generator has a higher efficiency in a more compact shape, and as fringe benefit does not release heat into the engine compartment where the temperature in summer can already be high due to the main engine's presence.

Volpi was initially known for assembling petrol and diesel engines with generators, pumps, compressors and similar devices for naval shipyard purposes. In the 1980's, Volpi Tecno Energia, following the demands of the nautical leisure market, oriented itself toward this sector, obtaining a success higher than expected, enabling the company to develop increasingly more sophisticated and finalized units for leisure boats.
